How to add items

Top  Previous  Next

This section will describe how to add items using the blue MBS screen. Entering items into the other sections is essentially the same, as described in the ASA RVG or DVA sections. It is possible to add items to more than one section. However, depending upon the type of fee you select, only one list of items (either MBS, RVG or DVA) will be shown on the account.

There are 3 methods to add items to the account:

Type a known item number into the anaesthetic item column and press enter. The details will be inserted from the relevant book. This is the quickest method if you know the numbers.
Open the MBS or RVG book by clicking the appropriate button and click the Add button when you have located the correct item. This is ideal if you need to search for a particular item.
Select an item from the Quick Items or Modifiers list. You can store commonly used items in the Quick Items list.

In each case, the item number is inserted, with the matching unit value, procedure description and MBS schedule fee. The item date and description can be further edited, but the unit value and fee cannot. When you add the first Anaesthesia for ... item, a time item will be inserted automatically, and if appropriate, an age modifier will also be entered. See the RVG anaesthesia section for more details.

NoteOnly MBS items should be inserted into the MBS or DVA sections and only ASA RVG items should be inserted into the RVG section.

Item dates

The default item date is the operation date which is entered on the Operation page. If you need to, adjust the date manually or use the popup calendar by double clicking on the date field. Click the + or - buttons in the Date column heading to increment the selected date by a day or use the + and - keys on the keyboard for the same effect when the cursor is in the date field. If the operation date is modified, all the item dates will also be modified, after an appropriate warning is given.

The surgical item column

Prior to the incorporation of the RVG schedule into the MBS schedule (Nov 2001), it was necessary to include surgical item numbers and their associated anaesthetic value. The S.Item column still exists for backward compatibility but has been disabled when using MBS books of November 2001 or later.
