AMA schedule

Top  Previous  Next

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has its own schedule of fees which includes items for surgical and anaesthesia services. Mostly, the items which relate to anaesthesia are identical to the RVG schedule of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA). Consequently, Access Anaesthetics does not include the AMA schedule.

It is sometimes said that the RVG may be used with a unit value up to the maximum recommended by the AMA. This rate is often used for workers compensation and third party accounts, and defaults for these rates can be set up on the Unit and time values page of the Options form. If you want to 'charge AMA rates', you should create an account based on the green RVG page of the Items form and specify your own unit value on the Fee page, up to the maximum recommended by the AMA. This maximum rate is advised periodically by the ASA.

There is no documented method of using AMA items on your accounts if they do not appear in the RVG schedule. However, using the (hidden) item editing window, it is possible to include any item number, unit value, description and fee you wish. This could be adapted to insert a non-listed AMA item.
